Today is the first day of the new President's term.


And as it should, the first item of the day is the list of the new President's appointees for cabinet positions (Aquino names Cabinet. Old, new faces in official family). This report gave some analysis of the selection and gave space to President Aquino's responses to interview questions. Although there is a question on the DENR appointee coming from a supposed environmentalist group, the news still generally gave the new president a positive treatment. Aquino +1.

Independent probe of May polls sought - a continuation of yesterday's news regarding the flawed automated elections. The blame is placed squarely on SMARTMATIC's shoulder. SMARTMATIC -1.

Binay may hold court at Coconut Palace - a news space exclusively for the new VP. Binay +1.

Without saying what it means, the main headline today says there is something wrong with automated electiosn.


Rep. Locsin is grabbing headlines when even without presenting proof, he went on to comment that the automated election is flawed (Locsin: May polls flawed. He won’t recommend automation in 2013). Well it seems the news is all about that, grabbing headlines.

16 nations sending top-level delegations to Aquino inaugural - a report about what is going to happen in tomorrow's oath-taking of the new President, ringing it positive as high level delegations are supposedly coming to attend. Aquino +1.

Goodbye cracks shell of tough CHR chair - a positive coverage of outgoing CHR chief who will be the next DOJ secretary. I am not sure why but the Inquirer seems to be all out in its support for De Lima for the past few days and may therefore be worth monitoring. De Lima +1.

Aquino swamped with unsolicited advice - a list of advice given to the incoming President, did not treat him positively but has potential to result in negative spin depending on how Pres. Elect Aquino will take them.

DTI scraps expiry dates of gift checks - a news about DTI reigning in on gift certificates.

Textbook crusader cautions DepEd - a continuation on defective text books. DepEd -1.

De Lima says witness’ killing has chilling effect - more coverage on De Lima, making her now a household name. De Lima +1.

The choice for Foreign Affairs Secretary in the incoming administration took the main headline today.


Although the title seems to insinuate that there are some controversy in the re-appointment of the DFA secretary (DESPITE OPPOSITION Romulo keeps DFA post. Arroyo’s trusted Cabinet member chosen), the news report itself is coming from the point of view of President-elect Aquino. The report also enumerated the list of secretaries that has been so far been presumed to be taking their posts. Aquino +1.

Cebu Daily News garners two press awards - is a news report on the success of a sister publication of the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

No joy ride in limo for Arroyo, Aquino - a report on interviews with the present administration's deputy spokesperson and from the incoming President, himself. The report surprisingly exonerates too early President-elect Aquino of not being able to change the country in the coming 6 years. Aquino +1.

Analysis. Arroyo’s farewell ignores governance issue - is an analysis from Amando Doronila and is of course negative to President ARroyo. Arroyo -1.

3 silvers, 2 bronzes for RP at Cannes - a news about Filipino marketing creatives being recognized internationally.

Even if almost 60% of the Filipino voters in the last elections did not vote for the incoming President, the Inquirer front page today feature as its main news the street party dubbed as the "People's Victory".



Even if rains are expected on the day (INAUGURAL FEVER HEATS UP: It’ll rain on Aquino’s day but who cares?), it was said that there is no stopping the street party after the inaugural. No, the incoming President is not expected to give the highlights of his would-be administration, no he is not expected to declare his support for the FOI Bill nor will he be expected to outline his other agenda. Instead he will be expected to sing, perhaps even rap in a street party by and for his supporters. Obviously, others will see this as gloating for winning the last elections but it seems the Inquirer thought it is appropriately normal. Aquino +1.

Times folk help watch house of 2 presidents - reports that it is perfectly okay for the new President to stay in his home in Times street. Aquino +1.

Eagle-eyed senator who saw tomorrow is 96 - a feature about former senator Benitez' achievements, which is a long delayed recognition.

Meloto turns down Aquino offer to be housing czar - looks like a promotional piece about GK and GK's Meloto and a bit about outgoing VP De Castro. DeCastro +1.

Beat it! Cebu inmates air gripes thru MJ moves - a news report which is perhaps a lesson on how to rehabilitate prison inmates.

Breaking the mold, tough soldier salutes gay son’s show - a feature on a father's acceptance of a son.

As if to say that the killing of a potential witness in a gruesome massacre is really deplorable, the Inquirer Front Page today has as its main headline the US Ambassador's statement.


In the news itself however, (US envoy deplores killing. MILF sheltered key Maguindanao massacre witness), doubts are cast on the identity of the slain person and the circumstances which the same person was killed. The news report also gave an angle on the participation of the MILF, raising more questions on the value of the supposed witness and the events leading to his killing. The real losers in this report are the lights of truth and justice which goes dimmer after every press coverage.

Estrada to Binay: Lead antigraft agency or you’re ‘NPA’ - looks like a press release coming from VP-elect Binay's camp. Binay +1.

Luistro to review DepEd sex ed program - features an interview with the incoming DepEd Secretary but only on sex education.

Transparency Int’l tells Noy: Create body to jail thieves - another one of those unsolicited advise given to President-elect Aqiuno. I can't read whether this news is negative or positive to the incoming President.

Aquino vows weekly presscon, wants ‘honeymoon for 6 yrs’ - says President Aquino will be open to the public. Aquino +1.

Taste test: Arroyo chefs, waiters, staff ready banquet for Aquino - deals on the issue on the job tenure of Malacanang staff supposedly numbering a thousand.

Arroyo leaves P340-B budget deficit, ‘highest in RP history’ - features interviews with Sens. Escudero and Angara with contrasting view on the budget deficit, making the news both negative and positive to the outgoing President. We can say though that the news report is negative to Arroyo because Sen Escudero's side is given prominence in the title. Arroyo -1.

There is another news about the ongoing Soccer World Cup which report I did not find on inquirer.net, but seems to be exclusively about the sports event.

President Arroyo seems not too much of a bad girl today on the Inquirer Front Page, while both Binay and Aquino still enjoys positive coverage:

The assassination of a massacre witness took the headlines today.


Today's main headline belatedly reports the assassination of a Maguindanao Massacre witness (Massacre witness killed. Ex-militiaman didn’t get protection from DoJ). The news report is incongruent though for several reasons:

1. According to those interviewed, the witness did not trust the DOJ, yet was asking witness protection from the same agency.
2. The report said the person is a very important witness yet mass media did not know he was killed for about 10 days..
3. It seems that the witness trusted some other people, Harry Roque of CenterLaw, some in the mass media, the Commission on Human Rights, who all did not give him protection, yet everyone says the blame should be on the DOJ whom the witness allegedly did not trust.
4. As early as 5PM yesterday, there is an interview with DOJ chief Agra on radio about the assassination of the witness which directly contradicts the statement made by Atty. Harry Roque about postponements and changes in venue on the meeting with DOJ personnel and the witness, yet the report did not mention the DOJ's side.
5. Harry Roque also said he just learned there was a bounty on the witness for 4 Million pesos put up by some people (perhaps those who want him dead), which the media did not know about - a very important witness indeed?

If this is how mass media covers a very important news, then we are not going to get any justice served to anyone any time soon. Arroyo -1.

‘Jesse’ knew he was a dead man walking - a news report on an interview with the now dead witness in March 2010, describing among others the President's closeness with the Ampatuans. Arroyo -1.

Arroyo promotes all gov’t lawyers - a news report coming out of a one-sided interview with CSC Chairperson Karina DAvid, who mainly says President Arroyo is promoting government lawyers to protect herself from prosecution. Arroyo -1.

2016 POLITICS Pimentel: Roxas blocking Binay entry - features Sen. Pimentel's guesses that makes Roxas looks like politicking this early. This news report also features press releases coming from the incoming VP. Roxas -1. Binay +1.

Militants vow to hound Arroyo with cases - is a news report on how to totally embarrass a President on her way out. Arroyo -1.

Aquino picks DLSU head for DepEd - is a feature on the incomgin DepEd chief, some comments from a teachers' association on the choice, and some reports on some statements by the incoming President about his appointees, that came out neutral.

Whatever happened to … Wreck done by ‘Princess’ - a report about the sea tragedy.

‘Thrilla’ for MJ from Manila to Manhattan - a Reuters report on the anniversary of Michael Jackson's death.

Binay not getting any cabinet post took the main headlines today on the Inquirer Front Page..


The flavor of the week is the relationship between VP-elect Binay and P-elect Aquino and the ongoing search for cabinet secretaries (Binay won’t take any Cabinet post. Roxas seen as stumbling block, says VP camp). Although the title looks as if the VP-elect is bitter on the developments, the contents of the news shows the VP is giving way so as to make the Noynoy cabinet team more cohesive than having a non partymate as member. The 2nd half of the same news gave space to good comments about CHR chief/incoming DOJ Sec. De Lima. Binay +1, DeLima +1.

United Nations seeks extension of RP troops in Golan - a news report about the Philippines troops' UN peace keeping mission in the middle east.

LPG inferno kills 9 in Cavite - a news report about two sad incidents that happened yesterday.

SC wants PNP report on missing WB executive - a combined report on the missing WB exec and the recent abduction of COMELEC Comm Yusuph's son that did not explain why said reports are combined. The first case though took aim at the PNP and treated them negatively. PNP -1.

Burgos’ ma: Back to square one - took Burgos' mother's comments against the Supreme Court decision. Supreme Court -1.

Murder raps filed vs cop suspect in Davao radioman’s slay - took swipes on Arroyo on the recent spate of violence involving media people. Arroyo -1.

Arroyo sweet, short goodbye, fades to ‘quieter public role’ - gave space to Pres. Arroyo's goodbye speech, without much negative comment. Arroyo +1.

Baguio bet spent P200; Estrada, Binay, P453M - a news report on election expenses, including some surprising information that businessmen including First Pacific chair Manny Pangilinan and SM's Henry Sy contributed to Estrada's campaign. I cannot figure if the news is negative or positive to the personalities involved.

Possibly riding the campaign slogan of the incoming President, the Inquirer front page today gave prominent coverage of CHR chair De Lima's possible appointment to the Department of Justice.


In a country where we have two women presidents, in very recent memory, the first sentence of the Inquirer main headline news report today took amazement of the DOJ chief being a woman (Rights chief to head DoJ. De Lima’s job: Pursue big grafters). The news report did not mention though the accomplishments of the incoming DOJ sec as CHR Chairperson, very typical of our mass media looking at the wrong things. The news report also gave space to other appointments, specifically that of Sec. Bert Romulo's possible reappointment at the DFA, which some interviewed people oppose, for reasons which are again, well, unreasonable. As usual, the report gave the present administration very failing marks. Arroyo -1.

The other news report in the front page today are as follows:

Aquino man in N. Vizcaya gunned down - a report on a spate of violence a little short of entirely blaming the present administration. Arroyo -1.

‘CULTURE OF IMPUNITY': US to help Aquino stop media killings - a news report where the subject of the title is nowhere to be found in the news itself, turns out to be about a litany of the sins of the present administration as far as media killings are concerned. Arroyo -1.

Fast action urged in Yusoph kidnap or violence feared - a news report on the kidnapping of the son of a COMELEC official. If the other news reports are compared with this one, the reader would begin to wonder why Arroyo is not being blamed again, obviously a double standard.

It’s for real; Charice turns ‘Gleek’ - a news feature on Charice' upcoming appearance on Glee, the popular TV show in the US.

SC orders full CHR probe of Jonas Burgos kidnap - a news on a kidnap that has seen no developments in years. AFP -1.

I-TEAM REPORT: RP trails ASEAN nations by 2 school years; Grade 12 needed. Why we’re left behind - a continuation on the feature on the country's basic education system (primary and secondary) that gave somewhat a positive spin for the incoming President at the end of the piece. Aquino +1.

Arroyo gets high marks from her former UP professor - supposedly a positive press release for the outgoing President that turn out to be a negative treatment by the Inquirer writer. Arroyo -1.

Surely, if we are to follow the Inquirer everyday, especially more so today, we would conclude that all the problems in the Philippines is caused by the present administration.

The main news today in the Inquirer Front Page is the developments on the continuing story on recent media killings.



The headline though (Vice mayor in media slay. Raps filed against Ilocos Norte exec, aide), which mentions of raps being filed did not complete its work by not mentioning anything if an arrest order is released on the suspects. The reader of the news will be left wondering why charges are filed even before the suspects are arrested. Meanwhile, the reader also are not informed the suspects are at large and/or in hiding. Even on topics so close to their hearts, the Inquirer seem to fail to do its job properly. The news continue to remind us on the count of the number of dead journalists (at 103) during Arroyo's tenure and surely negative to the outgoing administration. Arroyo -1.

Only courts can stop sex ed, says DepEd - letting out conflicts in statements left unresolved, the front page today reported on the DepEd's resolve to continue Sex Ed but "as long as we have (there are) consultations" - whatever that means. The report also continue not to access (or report) the contents of the teaching modules which it should have done long ago so that the readers can evaluate for themselves whether said Sex Ed is proper or not.

‘Emperor’ Bangit sad on leaving AFP - is surprisingly a positive take on AFP chief Bangit, on his "early" retirement. The news did not provide complete details though as to whether such early retirement has any effect on his status and on the expected benefits the General is to receive which is assured in more normal retirements. Bangit +1.

DoJ affirms decision to sue Sulpicio exec - -a belated development on a sea tragedy, the report surprisingly missed out on why the specific executives are to be sued while the others, especially government officials regulating sea travel, are not.

Aquino meets with ‘Cabinet’ at Times Street home - running the rumor mill on possible appointments, this news gave life to press releases (nay free pass) coming from the Binay camp and from the less known Alcala who seems to be pushed for the Dept. of Agriculture post. Binay +1.

Vuvuzelas expected to make a blast in Asia soon - rather than pick up the huge development going on the world cup, the Inquirer picked up a minor report from AP about trumpets that are annoyed and loved at the same time by the same football spectators.

I-TEAM REPORT. Local dialects key to global success. Why we’re left behind - is quite a refreshing revelation on another education issue as to which medium of instruction is best suited for the proper learning of our children.

OP-ED COLUMNISTS. Inquirer gets Habito, Tiglao–and more of David - is a report on the changes on the schedules and roster of the Inquirer's own columnists.

The Inquirer seems to continue bringing out incomplete reports based on our monitor of their Front Page. However, and in fairness to the paper, we have not monitored the inner pages which might have dealt with some facts supporting the main reports. So I advise that readers of this Inquirer monitor and the readers of the actual paper judge for themselves whether the Inquirer is doing a better or worse job now than before and not rely on our monitor alone.

Rather than treat the problem as a failure of the police authorities to prevent or, even more so, solve killings happening around the country, the focus of today's headlines is the so called "culture of impunity" of the Arroyo administration.


It is amazing how even newspapers are looking at and even using deaths of those belonging to their industry (mass media), as a political issue when the real issue should have been the breakdown of peace and order (Another journalist killed : Digos writer 3rd media fatality listed in 5 days). This news report, maybe even for the wrong reason, is negative all over to the Arroyo administration. Arroyo -1.

The other news in the front page today are as follows:

Analysis: Poor’s clamor shows in Binay, Estrada votes - an analysis by Amando Doronila which gave positive treatment mostly to Binay but also to Aquino. Binay +1. Aquino +1.

Bank service fee lifted for OFW remittances - is basically a business news that could affect bank charges on OFW's remittances.

Noynoy, in the eyes of ‘Noynoy’ - a good treatment on the real Aquino from the fake Aquino, comedian Willie Nepomuceno. Aquino +1.

Rizal descendant global social entrepreneur - a news report on a successful Filipino staying in the US, who happen to also be a descendant of our National hero.

Erroneous textbooks still rated perfect by DepEd: Why we’re left behind - part one of a series, this report is initially a one-sided assessment of the current situation on wrong textbook contents used in our public school system (there are no comments coming from the DepEd for their own defense). Needless to say, the DepEd is treated negatively in the report.

COMMENTARY: The blind leading the blind - An article from the person who originally blew the whistle on erroneous books, Mr. Antonio Calipjo Go.

BI sees 20% rise in foreign students - is an enlightening and welcome news on additional foreign students enrolled in the Philippines.

With nothing much to talk about about the new President, the Philippine Daily Inquirer is reduced to following up on the plans on the inauguration.



While we still have not heard the specific details on how to alleviate poverty or stop corruption in our impoverished nation, the main headline today talked to QuezonIII, a supposed historian (probably purported so because his name is part of history), on the preparations for the Presidential inauguration (No parade for Aquino on June 30 inaugural) which we all have heard already too much about. Of course, the point of view coming from QuezonIII, who is obviously an Aquino supporter but was usually portrayed in the mass media as an independent analyst, is purely positive to the incoming President. Aquino +1.

The other news in the front page today are as follows:

Opposition icon Eva Kalaw, 90, still has lots of living to do - a feature about on Kalaw had a short dig on both Arroyo and Aquino, more so on the former, but not enough to merit a count.

Mike Arroyo spinal surgery a success; now, he talks of golf - is a coverage on the First Gentleman without so much surprisingly of any negative treatment. Amazingly though, from the time the surgery is announced, no one has mentioned the exact ailment the FG is having which warrants the intervention nor the exact procedure he is to undergo. I suspect it is one those less invasive techniques he is subjected to as the report says he is awake just 1 hour after the surgery. If it is so, it is a actually too much of a stretch to call it a "surgery".

FATHER'S DAY: Girl survives massacre but finds a father and a name - is a story about a little girl and her adoptive father.

First prison orchestra sounds, feels like freedom to cons - is the latest on a prison talents program.

US envoy hosts night of music and all that jazz - a news about an event hosted by the US Ambassador and also a promotion of the band that played jazz in the same event.

In a country where people are dying of poverty, the biggest news the most read newspaper came up with on the birthday of its national hero, is as to who will finally administer the oath of office to the incoming President.


No, the main news was not referring to the blindfolded lady representing justice, but the lone dissenter in the Supreme Court decision on Chief Justice appointment by Arroyo (Lady justice to administer Aquino oath : ‘The honor is mine,’ says Morales). The news also talked about the preparations for the said oath-taking ceremonies mentioning that the Aquino sisters and the Binay children are all involved in the same. Obviously, the event is being transformed into a family affair and signaling perhaps six years of the same family members on the headlines.

Arroyo’s ‘last days’: Frenzy of inaugurals in Pampanga - the last portion of this news took a dig at Arroyo for being in Pampanga too much towards the end of her term. Arroyo -1.

De Castro, 4 others face graft raps for ‘Smokey’ - a news report that does not have the details of what it is trying to report, except that the VP is charged with graft. De Castro -1.

Aquino tells poll volunteers: My parents will haunt you if... -is a kind of coverage that is better left to smaller features in gossip magazines.

Suu Kyi marks birthday; world remembers - a report on street actions by supporters of the Burmese previously detained but now only isolated leader, including a must-do call for the incoming President.

Kris Aquino: We’re sensitive to Roxas’ feelings - possibly to explain why President-elect Aquino is somewhat cold to Binay, this report reveals how we should brace ourselves from now on more impertinent news about Kris Aquino. Aquino +1.

The main news today seems to indicate that Sen. Mar Roxas (and possibly the rest of the Liberal Party) is now back in action.


After shying away from the limelight after his loss to now VP-elect Jojo Binay, Sen. Mar Roxas is now back in action, seemingly at a very influential status to President-elect Aquino (Roxas heads transition team. Aquino tasks him to direct transfer of power). However, the news also featured a comment by a spokesperson of VP Jojo Binay and gave the latter positive treatment as well. Roxas +1, Binay +1.

Swiss-Filipino rescued so swiftly he hardly knew it - is a story of the rescue of kidnap victim from Zamboanga.

‘Tonyboy’ gave P100M, leads Aquino’s 96 big campaign donors - exposes the possible vested interests in the incoming Aquino administration. Aquino -1.

Today, the Inquirer Front Page seems to be enjoying kicking Arroyo on the butt on her way out. Meanwhile, even after the elections, the contest between Binay and Roxas goes on and is proving to be an interesting watch.

At last recognizing that the President Arroyo's term is indeed ending, the Inquirer front page today feature a news coming from the First Gentleman.


The main headline today (First Gentleman: We have left Palace. Only 17 days to go before Arroyo term ends) is somewhat a positive report on the First Gentleman, getting his point of view, and hence, uncharacteristically positive to Arroyo. Arroyo +1.

Miss Universe 2008 Smartmatic’s hottest flash card - is a PR move from Smartmatic. SmartMatic +1.

Aquino eyes 2 posts for Robredo, 1 is DILG - is a news report on who may be getting government posts under the Aquino administration.

Arroyo shows care for media; radioman killed in South - although this news covered some of Arroyo's show of accomplishments, half of the news reports about another journalist being killed in Davao, making the whole report negative for the President. Arroyo -1.

Verzosa bids farewell to Ma’am - still insisting that there is rift between Arroyo and Versoza, even when the former conferred the latter with a "Legion of Honor". With a brief review of her accomplishments involving the PNP, this news is both negative and positive to the outgoing President. Arroyo +1 -1.

SC: Corona is it, with finality - is neither positive nor negative to anyone, only negative to the Filipino People for having their leaders not working in unison to each other.

Sex ed not sexed up, DepEd assures Church - should have been a discussion of the content of the teaching modules but instead focused on the opinions of different personalities, therefore not adding anything to the debate. The news though seems there is no one positively or negatively portrayed.

The main news on the Inquirer today is on the never-ending saga on Bangit's retirement from the AFP.

The Inquirer Front Page main headline today (Bangit set to retire early : ‘Emperor’ begins bidding farewell to troops) is a rehash of old news about Bangit's tentative retirement. This news has been going on for days, even weeks now and perhaps a result of lack of new news on the goings-on in the country today. We cannot give so much judgement as to who this news gave any benefit today.

The other news in the front page today are as follows:

PNP chief to give Arroyo ‘exit briefing’- is a nother waste of time of a news, a rehash of old news which has been ringing our ears over and over again. Again, our monitor would not give judgement as to who benefits this kind of news.

Aquino inaugural at Quirino, party in QC - if our country is a more advanced country, people would have cringed at the thought that part of the first day of our new President will be devoted to a street party with celebrities who helped him win the elections. The mass media would have also admonished the President for very obvious slants again older women. But since we are in the Philippines, this news even manages to have a positive impact for Aquino as it is coming from his point of view. Aquino +1.

BACK TO SCHOOL. Sex education now a reality - is about the state of educational system in the country, and also of sex education to be taught in schools. The news had some word coming from the teacher's association, castigating the present administration for allegedly lowering the education budget. Arroyo -1.

Belmonte gets backing of militants in House - is a press release from supposed "militant" congressmen aligning themselves with Belmonte versus a dreamed-up Arroyo scheme to be speaker of the house. I am not sure what benefit we get from these kinds of news but it is definitely making Arroyo seem like very unlikeable. Arroyo -1.

Mangroves bring life back to a deserted shore - gave space to a tree(Mangrove)-planting project in CamSur.

Bus rented by Iranians had ‘666’ plate number - is a news on a tragic event with an embarrassing take on how accidents happen in the Philippines. The title though adds insult by bringing in the idea of superstition as possible reason. I think the whole country is disadvantaged by this news.

SALN shows Aquino entering Palace ‘poorer’ than Arroyo - seems to be a question on Aquino's SALN which shows him "poorer" than the encumbent or a remark on Arroyo for having too much money and increasing the same during her incumbency. It depends to the reader as to who benefits from this news as each could read it the way they want it.

There is another news in the front page today regarding sex education which we do not see the web copy.

The sad fate of a group of a leisure holiday travelers that turned into a tragedy (Cebu bus crash kills 20, mostly Iranians. 10 others in critical condition) is the center of the news today, an unwelcome respite to politics, but a respite nonetheless.

More RP nurses going to Britain - seems like an advertisement to get Filipino nurses applying to UK for jobs.

Next AFP chief must be senior general–Biazon - continues the saga of the choice for the next AFP chief, an opinion piece of Biazon masquerading as an interview. I did not find any negative or positive undertones in the news itself.

P1B offered for mansion on Arlegui - is a continuation of the search for the perfect place for the incoming President to stay during his term. Although the topic is petty, the Inquirer has treated it as if it is a matter of national concern rather than just a waste of time.

Analysis. Aquino lays down rules as Arroyo fades into infamy - a piece of commentary that only an Aquino fan and an Arroyo hater could make. Aquino +1. Arroyo -1.

Museum for 1st RP flag gets face-lift - a news piece about Aguinaldo and perhaps featured because of the anniversary of our declaration of independence.

Yesterday was officially the 112th Independence Day of the Philippines. However, the front page of the Inquirer thought that it did not deserve a headline.


The news that made it to the headlines though is still somehow related (Arroyo parades triumphs during reign) but from a point of view that Arroyo has used the event to parade her "triumphs". The report gave due space to Arroyo's supposed legacy. The same also gave a whole lot of space to say the legacy where immaterial. Arroyo -1.

Dead-set mom finds suspect in 2 sons’ murder, not authorities - is a story about the search for a murder suspect and did not touch on national issues.

Secrets locked in Alberto house about Rizal’s mother - is a revelation that Rizal's mother must have been an illegitimate child, according to Historical Institute Chair Ambeth Ocampo.

Aquino’s cousins learn lessons of life in sorties - is about the Aquino campaign, from the point of view of his nephews in the Aquino side and which gave the President-elect good treatment. Aquino +1.

PDI reporter wins Asia media prize for Legacy series - a congratulatory piece on their own reporter. It also gave a piece of information about mass media in the Philippines from the point of view of Maritess Vitug.

Too many Palace cooks may be out of work, spoil broth - reports that there are 1,000 cooks, waiters and housekeeping staffs in Malacanang, surely proving that many if not all of them would have to go in a simpler Aquino presidency - even when the news itself is actually about the transition. It is the 112th anniversary of our declaration of independence. There may be a huge flag in the main Photo in the front page today, but it has no reference whatsoever on the celebrations.


Rather than the event marking the farewell ceremonies of the military to President Arroyo, or the preparations for the anniversary of the declaration of Independence, unconfirmed details from unknown sources made it to the main headline of the Inquirer today Aquino listing top brass. Nolcom commander David eyed to replace Bangit. It is a waste of time to this as all those reported developments in Aquino's choice for military top brass may easily be proved later to be wrong. The report continues to be negative for Bangit though. Bangit -1.

DOTC post offered to Veep Binay - is a story about Binay, and then about incoming Exec Secretary Ochoa and outgoing defense chief Gonzales. This news gets Binay's point of view printed. Binay +1.

Arroyo bids farewell to troops - this time, it was Arroyo and Bangit's side given space in a report. Arroyo +1. Bangit +1.

Bypassed general skips Arroyo testimonial parade - this news seems to show that the Inquirer thought that Ferrer's (the General supposedly bypassed from promotion as AFP chief) side deserve equal treatment with Arroyo's military farewell. The title is even misleading as Ferrer did not actually skip the event. Arroyo -1, Bangit -1.

Pimentel exits with a blast at new, old senators - is a report on Pimentel's short description of our senators, without any real blast.

Ridiculous, says Comelec of pols’ campaign reports - is a report on campaign expenses obviously downplayed by the candidates.

Soccer fever sweeps planet except in RP - is just all about football's popularity..

The main headline give Aquino a thumbs up with seeming approval from the biggest economies in the world (US, China, Japan congratulate P-Noy : 3 biggest economic powers vow help). Aquino +1.

Meanwhile, the other news in the front page today are as follows:

Transition team seeks Arroyo-Aquino limo ride - is a presumptive title on what is still an open transition script on the day of the new President's oathtaking. No one benefitted from the report.

Aquino receives congrats call from Arroyo, feels ‘awkward’ - reports on Aquino's feeling of awkwardness on Arroyo's congratulatory telephone call. Although obviously Aquino sounds like a showbiz personality trying to stir an intrigue, the Inquirer did not take note of that.

How Binay did it: Chiz, Mar, seniors, frat brods is a story coming purely from Binay's camp on his win. Binay +1.

Comelec invites critics to dinner and drinks - is a report mostly coming from the COMELEC's point of view. COMELEC +1.

Smoke signals up over Times St., White House - is the Inquirer reverse story on their yesterday's internet feature about the smoking situation of the two Presidents, Aquino and Obama. While yesterday, it was only Aquino left standing alone in the smoking room, today, the Inquirer seems to be reporting that Obama is not totally smoke-free. I say Aquino +1.

Aquino: June 12 must be immovable holiday - is a report where Aquino promotes the idea that Arroyo has changed the day when Independence is commemorated, although he himself knows that the celebration is still on June 12. Aquino +1.

Aquino sister to Sison: Say when, where I met Arroyo, such lie - is a coverage on a denial of something which was not covered by the mass media. Aquino +1.

Hail to the chief declares the main headline of the Inquirer Front Page today.


Of course, the main headline (Hail to President Benigno Aquino III. Ninoy-Cory son also rises) is positive to both Aquino and Binay, and understandably so. Aquino +1. Binay +1.

First order of business: List down all problems - seems to be a wrong take on what Aquino said. The President-elect actually said the first order of business is he will study the problems. Of course, that is a gaffe, as being a Congressman and then Senator and then a Presidential Candidate, he is supposed to already know the problem. The Inquirer reporter, Mr. Gil Cabacungan, the one we knew as an avid fan of Aquino, did not notice the blaring gaffe, though. Aquino +1.

Aquino: Bangit not my AFP chief; Verzosa to stay head of PNP - is surprisingly a fair report on AFP Chief of Staff Bangit. It did not report why Aquino is not interested on Bangit to be AFP chief though, clearly shielding the President-elect's action from scrutiny.

Binay won’t be spare tire, eyes DILG is a positive report on the new VP who seems to be positioning himself to be DILG secretary. Amazingly, the report did not mention that Binay once said that he would accept anything else. Binay +1.

Timeline: Jejomar C. Binay - is a continuation of the previous news, this time showing the highlights of Binay's resume.

ANALYSIS. RP politics comes full circle in amazing turn of events - is a continuation of Doronila's analysis on Aquino's "mandate", and the rise of the Marcoses. While Marcos is of course, treated negatively, it seems Doronila gave it to them for their return. Meanwhile, Doronila seems resolute in reiterating Aquino's mandate. Aquino +1.

Today, the Inquirer centers on the news we already knew more than 2 weeks ago..


Today's main banner in the Inquirer Front Page is no news at all(Congress final count: It’s Aquino-Binay. Proclamation set Wednesday at Batasan). It is plaingly stating the facts of the events though and we cannot see if it is beneficial to anybody.

The other news in the front page today are as follows:

Cory general ready to serve as DND chief; Bangit won’t quit - this news report seems to be both negative and positive to President-elect Aquino. Positive because it seems to push for Bangit's courtesy resignation, while negative because it puts Aquino's back on the wall on the matter of Gazmin's selection as Defense Secretary. I judge the news as ultimately positive to Aquino though for its tagging of a "landslide" victory. Funny though that the Aquino camp would want Bangit to offer his courtesy resignation to save the new President from a situation where he would replace Bangit without justification, which is actually the case. If our mass media is normal, the incoming President would have been embarrassed already by the situation. Still, Aquino +1..

Binay thanks voters, Cory, FPJ, Erap, Chiz - is positive to both Aquino and Binay. It gave special treatment also to Chiz Escudero. Aquino +1. Binay +1. Escudero +1.

House ends poll probe; ‘koala’ ignored - is a continuation on talks about poll fraud, which would have benefited Congressman Locsin, the main resource person interviewed, if only we are monitoring him.

Climate crusader gets warm welcome - is a news coverage on former US VP Al Gore's visit/lecture/presentation in Manila with Arroyo in attendance. Gore received purely positive treatment from the report which is not counted here in this monitor.

Inconvenient beef: Go vegetarian, Gore - is a coverage of a group of animal lovers who wanted Gore and his environmental message to be more vegetarian.

New iPhone 4 features face time for video chat - is 99% positive to Apple, the company that produces the iPhone, not counted in this monitor.

Today's Inquirer front page features photos of both Aquino and Binay amidst the official canvass, while the main headline says the count is stalled by lack of COCs from Lanao.


The main headline Lanao Sur stalls canvass : No CoC yet due to special elections continues the saga of the congressional canvass and is not so much news anymore. The effect of the headline though seems to point to the possible delay in the proclamation of the incoming President and Vice President.

The other news today are as follows:

Next admin pressed on aid to OFWs - this news feature an interview mostly with losing Senatorial candidate Susan Ople about OFWs, and some statistics on migrant workers. Although it has the next admin on its title, the news itself did not feature the incoming President.

SINE DIE ADJOURNMENT, Freedom of info bill is dead–Nograles - this news report is of course negative to Nograles whose congress he led practically avoided ratifying the Sunshine Policy Bill. It features also a suggestion by Lawyer Romulo Macalintal that Congress can still ratify the bill in their session today or before they proclaim the new President. Nograles -1.

Jailed Ampatuans throw party for visitors - is just about what the title said, of all things a party in Jail. Of course, readers are would be appalled by the news but we are not apprised as to whether this is normally allowed in jail or not. This news, then, is mainly about the special treatment given to the massacre suspects. It goes without saying, Arroyo -1.

Bangit changes mind, won’t quit - is a news on the impending showdown between the AFP and the incoming President. I am not sure if the news is negative or positive to anyone but it seems dependent on who is reading it. So I won't make a call. I think though that Aquino spoke too soon regarding his dislike for Bangit and he is now thrown into a corner wherein his next action may demoralize the military, which will not be good not only for him but for the entire nation.

A yellow house also for smoker - is a continuation on the question as to where the incoming President will stay. The news presumed that Aquino already changed his mind and reconsidered his decision on staying in Times St. to avoid a nightmare scenario. Again, I cannot read whether this piece of news is negative or positive to anyone but it could promote the pettiness of the incoming President's issues.

Media need new breed of ‘mojos’ - a feature on mass media practitioners to get more digital in the field (mojos as in mobile journalists) and encouraging them to be more regional rather than just local.

The Inquirer Front Page today continues to blame Nograles on the non-passage of the Freedom of Information Bill.


The main headline though seems to be another he-say-she-say treatment of the subject and did not do so much to verify if the procedure taken by the House is regular or out of the ordinary Solon hits Nograles for ignoring quorum :Cibac rep says Speaker capriciously didn’t see it. Obviously, this news is negative to Nograles only and not to all of the Lower House. Nograles -1.

It’s official: Rainy season has started - is an important news on the weather and not on any political personalities.

IT experts list sins of Comelec, partner - is a free space given to a supposed IT expert from the Phil. Computer Society who listed so called sins of COMELEC, but did not say nor prove whether there is indeed fraud. Even if the report is not to give proof on anything, the COMELEC is given bad press nevertheless. COMELEC -1.

Refreshed Aquino ready to be proclaimed - is not just about Aquino but about Binay as well, who were both given positive treatment. Aquino +1, Binay +1.

Right, Left swamp Aquino with advice - is supposedly an analysis of who is giving Aquino advice, but is a actually a whipping of the Arroyo administration by Amado Doronila, who proved to be an Aquino supporter.. Arroyo -1.

For bucking Moro deal, Roxas lost in ARMM, says new gov - While Roxas is given free space some days back, this time the news is purely a negative treatment for him. Roxas -1.

Pictures of the incoming President in different stages of fun adorn the front page of the Philippine Daily Inquirer today. For this alone, the Inquirer gave a very positive image to Sen. Noynoy Aquino. Aquino +1.


The headline news, though did not have anything to do with the photos, but instead pinned blame to the present administration the non-passing of the Freedom of Information Bill in Congress Information Bill backers pin hopes on Aquino III . Unfortunately though, the headline news did not so much discuss the content of the bill, its features and as to why they are important. Surely, people are left feeling again only about good versus evil, without really thinking about it. The same report features mainly he-say-she-say treatment of the situation while the Inquirer kept itself blameless for whatever was being said. Arroyo -1.

The other news in the front page are as follows:

Bantay Balota morphs into Bantay Gobyerno - is a report on a group that supported Aquino in his campaign who now says they are here to make sure Aquino does his job, in some sort of a warning. I cannot say yet whether it gave Aquino a positive or negative view.

So what’s wrong with Boy Abunda? - is a report in defense of Aquino for seemingly saying without thinking that he wished Abunda to head the Tourism Department. Aquino +1.

New President can live in style but homey House of Dreams - is also giving Aquino positive spin by, diverting the issue to a search for a suitable place, on his petty proclamation that he did not want to stay in Malacanang. Again, Aquino +1.

‘LeGoreda’: Fantasy love team sizzling in cyberspace - Is a telenovela like rendering of the upcoming visit of former US Vice President Al Gore, pitting him to our Sen. Loren Legarda for a possible twee-tums match up.
