The 2010 PDI-FP Report

We have monitored the Front Page of the Philippine Daily Inquirer from April 15, 2010 up December 31, 2010 and here is the summary of the results:

Before the Elections

From April 15, to May 10, 2010, this monitor evaluated the PDI-FP news and concluded that the front page as a whole would have helped the candidacy of then Presidential candidate Aquino about 65% of the time (15/23). Meanwhile the Front Page would have helped former President Estrada 9% of the time (2/23) and each of the rest of the candidates 4% of the time (1/23) except for Senator Gordon who was not helped at all.

After the Elections

(to be continued)

December 31, 2010

To wrap up the year, the Phil. Daily Inquirer Front Page today gave President Aquino the space to tell us he is the best.

The headline (‘Gains are now being felt’. Aquino upbeat on economic takeoff in 2011) is a report mostly about President Aquino telling everyone that he is good possibly even heaven sent and that if we believe him we will be more happy, more hopeful, possibly feel better even when we are like frogs swimming in a pot of water slowly getting to boiling point. In fact, the weather bureau became more accurate just because Aquino became President. BTW, the paper forgot to mention that since President Aquino took over, the growth registered from the last three quarters of the previous administration slowed down by some sort of miracle. Aquino +1.

The headline (Vizconde seeks reversal. Exceptions to double jeopardy are cited) is an almost one-sided report for the petition to the SC to look into the Vizconde Massacre case again, against the recently acquitted suspects. The report gives credence to the petition as with space for positive comments such as "saving the judicial system", obviously chiding the Supreme Court decision. The report also gave space to Sen. Francis Pangilinan and Sec. Leila DeLima for their own comments, however insignificant they may be. SC -1. De Lima +1. Sen. Pangilinan +1.

The government's side on rebel extortions and a photo of an ambulance which figured in an accident took the center-stage in the Phil. Daily Inquirer Front page today.

The headline (Talks to take up NPA tax. Stop paying insurgents, gov’t asks businesses) is a continuation of the news on alleged mining company's extortions by the NPA, this time from the point of view of the government negotiating team panel member, who asked the mining companies why they are paying money to the rebel group when he should have asked himself the question. The Philippine Daily Inquirer Front Page today shows the news covering issues that seems to be most important to our people, Manny Pacquiao's upcoming fight and the wedding of celebrity singers Ogie Alacasid and Regine Velasquez who are also both supporters of President Aquino.

The headline (Pacquiao-Mosley fight on. World title match set May 7 in Las Vegas) is a report on the all too important upcoming fight, perhaps as assessed by the paper, or perhaps it is such a dull day today, of the people's champ and favorite congressman. Pacquiao +1.

The other news in the Front Page today:

Sunset wedding for singers Ogie, Regine - accompanied by a photo of the newlyweds while kissing lips to lips, this report is perhaps another important milestone in Philippine history as far as the paper must have felt. The importance of this news is of course highlighted by the fact that the busiest person in the country, in charge of uplifting the lives of a population of at least 90M, at least 5% of which are trying to eke a living below a dollar a day, President Aquino as one of the groomsmen. It would be noted that known celebrity Sharon Cuneta, perhaps busier than the President, although a wedding sponsor herself, is not able to attend.

Bandits free 2 Malaysians in Tawi-Tawi - a report on the release of the two Malaysians abducted by a group who seems to be Abu Sayaff members, giving credit to the Police. The abduction itself which happened in February 8, seemed to have remained unknown as it was not covered so much by the press. The report noted DILG Sec. Robredo's statement that it is the best Christmas gift to the victims' families, as if Robredo is family, while no one bothered to check if the Malaysians are Christians to be able to appreciate a gift on Christmas. TELLING THE FILIPINO STORY TO THE WORLD. Making of a president, PH style - look for the synonyms in the thesaurus for bad and the same for good and you get this De Quiros article contrasting President Arroyo from President Aquino. TELLING THE FILIPINO STORY TO THE WORLD. Hostage-taking cop chose a slow day - an on the scene report of their own coverage of the hostage fiasco that did not seem to have noted the absence of higher authorities.

The story on Morong 43 amidst the photo of a Belen hugs the Phil. Daily Inquirer Front Page today.

The headline (‘Morong 43’ finally free: Trillanes, Garcia await release order) is a report which says its title is wrong, with only 23 of the Morong 43 in raised fists are freed. Although the release of the other "health workers" are expected to follow, there are at least five others who may still be detained for other reasons. The paper called the Morong 43 as mere "health workers". This report is leaning more on the left than on the military side, although the latter is given some dwarfed space for its views. AFP -1.

The headline (SC: Webb et al. not vindicated. Court didn’t rule they are not guilty) is more or less a fair treatment of the SC after its decision in the Vizconde Massacre case, a report which also gave DOJ Sec. De Lima more than good space for her opinion. De Lima +1. SC +1.
