September 14, 2010

The Jueteng payola allegations completely took over, pushing the hostage taking incident totally out of, the Phil. Daily Inquirer Front Page today.

The main headline (Puno admits offers from ‘jueteng’ lords. Operators used kin, friends as ‘conduits’) is a Jueteng revelation coming from the Aquino administration itself, of course spinning everything to their favor. The report also says that the administration is focused on stamping out the numbers game, a total departure from what is heard and seen on radio and TV interviews of the President who seem not to see it as a priority (Jueteng does not kill). Aquino +1.

The other Front Page News today:

Aquino appoints Bacalzo PNP chief - a mostly positive treatment of the new PNP chief. PNP +1. Aquino +1.

Batangas STL franchisee underdeclaring sales - A report on illegal gambling and/or illegal schemes of legal gambling franchises, making sure it is reported as mostly local government problem, and surely absolving the national government.

Racket can be stopped - is another report affirming the local nature of the problem of Jueteng, again absolving the national government.

JUDICIAL REVOLT? Justices planning mass leaves - a surprisingly balanced take on the problems of the judiciary, a sort of he-says-she-says kind of balance, which is of course positive to the administration while negative to the courts. Such treatment though is not clearly cut out as our monitor grades the report as neutral.

Ombudsman runs to SC to seek relief - supposedly a press report with interviews from the Ombudsman that turned out mostly negative for her and her patron. Ombudsman -1. Arroyo -1.

Dengue kills 117 pupils, hits 12,000 others - a confusing report that tends to highlight the rise of the Dengue problem while the health department dismissed declaring a calamity because the problem is waning.

Unwanted baby won’t be wanting of a loving mother - a report on a baby boy left in an airplane, and the search for the mother.

Nuisance callers? Get a ‘digital secretary’ - a report on a telephone service that junks junk calls.

The scores today seem to show that the Phil. Daily Inquirer treats the administration with affection even when the issued headlined are supposedly negative to it.
Aquino: 2
PNP: 1
Ombudsman: -1
Arroyo: -1
