Typhoon Juan is still the one in the Front Page of the Phil. Daily Inquirer Today.
The main headline (‘Juan’ flattens 3 towns. Typhoon lingers in RP, may exit slowly Thursday) is a report on more casualties and damages sustained by the country from Juan's fury, bringing the number of dead to 22 and the damage to crops at more than P4B. The report did not mention that yesterday the President seems to have talked too soon and was proud of only few casualties sustained in the world's strongest typhoon this year. Also the report did not explain why there seems to be more damage in Zambales than in Ilocos Sur which was more directly hit by the typhoon. The absence of report of course shielded PAGASA from possible questions regarding mistakes in their forecasts and updates.
The other news today:
Explain, SC orders UP profs - a report on the ball now being held by UP professors who asked a SC justice to resign over alleged plagiarism on a penned decision. Although still a he-says-she-says report, the same exhausts all arguments from all sides giving enough information to the readers to make an informed judgment. For the first time in the more than 6 months since this monitor is started, we laud a specific Philippine Daily Inquirer Front Page news report.
UP IN THE AIR. OFW kills self inside plane toilet - a report on a sad ending to the plight of a returning OFW.
HK hostage survivor out of coma after 2 mos. - an update on the hostage survivor whose source of injury was still not explained up to this time. A theory that suggests that a hammer swung by Police in the rescue could have injured the victim, gives additional excitement to his awakening from coma.
JOKER ARROYO SAYS. ‘Joma pardon not the same as Trillanes’ - a he-says-she-says report on the issue of amnesty, repeating what was reported yesterday (Rex Robles' opinion) while including this time Sen. Arroyo's side. Again the report mentioned that Robles is a member of the Feliciano commission but did not mention that his opinion is contrary to the final report of the same commission, which makes the report somewhat leaning in support of the President's decision. Aquino +1.
Fire! 3rd gov’t witness says he heard Andal Jr. give order - an update on the Ampatuan trial giving exclusive space to the testimonies of a witness. Surely there are more information that could have happened in the trial but was not reported in this particular piece.
DoH backs the more, merrier, for safer revelry on New Year - a report on the suggestion of the DOH on an organized merry-making for the New Year.
Intramuros among 200 heritage sites facing ruin - a reminder of sorts to the administrators of Intramuros to save one of the heritage sites in Manila.
House ‘snapshot’ under influence of tobacco bloc - a news on an event that was held in 2008, promoting anti-smoking legislation in the country.
The score:
Aquino: 1
