November 17, 2010

Former President Arroyo while doing nothing to warrant any coverage is again on the headlines today.

The headline (Arroyo ‘aided’ Ampatuans—HRW. NY rights body says clan linked to 50 other abuses) is a report on a 96-page report by an International Human Rights group on the Ampatuans alleged impunity, linking former President to such, although it seems the report itself is critical not only of the former President but of all past and present administrations. The news report did not also explain how we can be looking at a report by a foreign group when our own mass media should have known the realities on the ground better. Arroyo -1.

The other news today:

NUMBER-CODING SCHEME. Gov’t gets tough on bus firms - the MMDA chief talking tough against erring bus firms, with President Aquino behind him. MMDA +1. Aquino +1.

Margarito: Pacquiao world’s best - a repeat of the report on the boxing match which Pacquiao won. Pacquiao +1.

‘No President keen on helping Marcos victims’ - a report on the problems of Marcos' human rights victims/claimants that gave a negative take on former President Arroyo, a tad negative on former President Cory Aquino, and a waiting attitude on the present administration. The report did not mention that the Phil. Government and the Marcos victims are actually both claiming from the same Marcos' estate and which would have easily explained the sitting President's natural non support of their cause. Arroyo -1.

COMMENTARY. After Hanoi, NY, Aquino needs defining vision - a second part of an analysis that has become more critical to the President than the first part. Aquino -1.

Top botanist killed in crossfire - a report on the sad death of a botanist, after being caught in a cross fire in a military encounter with "armed men". AFP -1.

Drug-related cases clogging nation’s courts - a report that gave major space (again) to Sec. De Lima's pronouncements while giving a bit of space to SC spokeperson Marquez. De Lima +1. SC +1.

From ‘Wow’ to ‘Pilipinas Kay Ganda’ - a report on a new tourism logo and branding that gave most space to the side of the Tourism Department which also gave credit to the President for sharing some inputs on the design. DOT +1. Aquino +1.

The scores:
Aquino: 1
De Lima: 1
DOT: 1
MMDA: 1
Pacquiao: 1
SC: 1
AFP: -1
Arroyo: -2
