December 23, 2010

The Philippine Daily Inquirer Front Page today shows the news covering issues that seems to be most important to our people, Manny Pacquiao's upcoming fight and the wedding of celebrity singers Ogie Alacasid and Regine Velasquez who are also both supporters of President Aquino.

The headline (Pacquiao-Mosley fight on. World title match set May 7 in Las Vegas) is a report on the all too important upcoming fight, perhaps as assessed by the paper, or perhaps it is such a dull day today, of the people's champ and favorite congressman. Pacquiao +1.

The other news in the Front Page today:

Sunset wedding for singers Ogie, Regine - accompanied by a photo of the newlyweds while kissing lips to lips, this report is perhaps another important milestone in Philippine history as far as the paper must have felt. The importance of this news is of course highlighted by the fact that the busiest person in the country, in charge of uplifting the lives of a population of at least 90M, at least 5% of which are trying to eke a living below a dollar a day, President Aquino as one of the groomsmen. It would be noted that known celebrity Sharon Cuneta, perhaps busier than the President, although a wedding sponsor herself, is not able to attend.

Bandits free 2 Malaysians in Tawi-Tawi - a report on the release of the two Malaysians abducted by a group who seems to be Abu Sayaff members, giving credit to the Police. The abduction itself which happened in February 8, seemed to have remained unknown as it was not covered so much by the press. The report noted DILG Sec. Robredo's statement that it is the best Christmas gift to the victims' families, as if Robredo is family, while no one bothered to check if the Malaysians are Christians to be able to appreciate a gift on Christmas. PNP +1.

Former NBI chiefs tangle in Vizconde case probe - No, we are not in for a Deja Vu. This report is simply a repeat of yesterday's front page news of the same, perhaps proof that indeed today is a slow day. De Lima +1.

TELLING THE FILIPINO STORY TO THE WORLD. Making of a president, PH style - look for the synonyms in the thesaurus for bad and the same for good and you get this De Quiros article contrasting President Arroyo from President Aquino. Perhaps such article that made to the front page indeed represents the 25 years the Inquirer seems to be so proud about. Arroyo -1, Aquino +1.

TELLING THE FILIPINO STORY TO THE WORLD. Hostage-taking cop chose a slow day - an on the scene report of their own coverage of the hostage fiasco that did not seem to have noted the absence of higher authorities.

Sandiganbayan gags lawyers on Garcia deal - The SandiganBayan and the office of the Ombudsman are the usual suspects, while De Lima and Trillanes are all in support of transparency which is President Aquino's supposed policy. Trillanes +1. De Lima +1. Aquino +1. Sandiganbayan -1. Ombudsman -1.

This time, no President at Mansion in Baguio - just a factual report on the President's schedule or absence of it on Christmas.

The scores today show the police force surprisingly in the positive row:
Aquino: 2
De Lima: 2
PNP: 1
Trillanes: 1
Sandiganbayan: -1
Ombudsman: -1
Arroyo: -1
